T.G.I.F.

Once again, MED and UPD peepz shared an appetizing merienda (snack) together. This time, it is a joint birthday blow-out from two of our lovely ladies here. A lot of thanks to you guys - Ate Cynch and Mitchiegirl :). We had mouth-watering spaghetti, spring rolls and a surprise treat - caramel puff corn. Really yummy that I almost forgot that I am not allowed to eat too much spaghetti for it's bad for my acid reflux.
Another week will come to pass for an ordinary office worker. Aha! Let me list down the things I have to accomplish on weekend:
1. Go to school early tomorrow to do allot ample time research for our projects. Our batch will also a meet at 1pm to discuss the forthcoming Acquintance Party.
2. Lots of errands on Sunday.
- Go to wet market
- Clean the fridge
- Help my sis in the laundry
- (And if time permits) accompany Hubby in Divisoria to buy some stuff he need to bring
on Tuesday
I guess, I won't be able to blog on Monday and Tuesday. I may file a short leave coz I need to spend quality time with Hubby and Thea.

On Working Abroad

I am still in state of shock since last Monday. The reason is about the news I mentioned in my previous post. After more than two months of waiting, Hubby’s visa for his overseas job was finally out. He is leaving soon, very soon… that would be next Tuesday, July 1. We are both unprepared. In fact, last week he requested the agency to give back the documents he submitted for he wanted to withdraw his application. However, they did not allow him and said his visa will be released soon. This is it and I just can’t believe it!

After declining an overseas job in 2006, he is now working in one of the utility companies here in Metro Manila. During my pregnancy, I appealed to him that he should stay here until our first baby arrived. Now, that we need to save a little for our future, he wants that go back to being an overseas Filipino worker. This is not an easy decision knowing that it will mean lonely days and nights for the three of us. Living miles away from each other is hard. Nevertheless, keeping lines of communication open will bridge our distance. There is Internet as well as mobile phones. Perhaps, this blog will help us a lot too.

Given the very short notice by the agency, we have many things to do before he leaves. We have to shop for the stuffs he need to bring, and more importantly maximize the time of being together. Last Monday, when we were eating at a fastfood, he told Thea that he is leaving soon. Here goes their short conversation:

Papa: Thea, pa’no yan?, aalis na si Papa.
Thea: Ayoko!

The true blue Daddy’s girl does not want her father to work abroad but as I’ve said, we can work it out by keep lines of communication open….

Good News, Bad News

Storm “Frank” hit the country yesterday and left thousands of Filipinos homeless. As the death toll nationwide from the typhoon soared to 229 yesterday, more than 700 passengers and crew were missing after Sulpicio Lines' M/V Princess of the Stars capsized last Saturday off Sibuyan Island in Romblon. (http://www.philstar.com/)
DepEd and CHED announced today that there were no classes in all levels in Metro Manila and 12 provinces in Luzon. That was sort of a good news to some students…On the other hand, employees like me, should report for work since we are not included in that suspension.

Personally, I have two exciting news today. First, I am perfectly okay now because the colds are gone. I choose to keep the second one undisclosed as of this moment but I promise to write a post about it on the next few days…

The Six Most Annoying Coworkers: Are You One?

by Doug White, Robert Half International

Nearly every workplace has them: the Naysayer, who dismisses team members' ideas; the Spotlight Stealer, who claims credit for a colleague's efforts; and other annoying coworkers who make collaboration difficult. Following are six professionals whose irritating behaviors and irksome attitudes prevent them from forming productive relationships at work -- and what you should to do avoid following in their footsteps:

1. The Naysayer. This office dweller delights in shooting down ideas. Even during "blue sky" brainstorming sessions, where all suggestions are to be contemplated with an open mind, the Naysayer immediately pooh-poohs any proposal that challenges the status quo.

The right approach: Because great solutions often rise from diverse opinions, withhold comment -- and judgment -- until the appropriate time. Moreover, be tactful and constructive when delivering criticism or alternative viewpoints.

2. The Spotlight Stealer. There is definitely an "I" in "team" according to this glory seeker, who tries to take full credit for collaborative efforts and impress higher-ups. This overly ambitious corporate climber never heard a good idea he wouldn't pass off as his own.

The right approach: Win over the boss and colleagues by being a team player. When receiving kudos, for instance, publicly thank everyone who helped you. "I couldn't have done it without ..." is a savvy phrase to remember.

3. The Buzzwordsmith. Whether speaking or writing, the Buzzwordsmith sacrifices clarity in favor of showcasing an expansive vocabulary of cliched business terms. This ineffective communicator loves to "utilize" -- never just "use" -- industry-specific jargon and obscure acronyms that muddle messages. Favorite buzzwords include "synergistic," "actionable," "monetize," and "paradigm shift."

The right approach: Be succinct. Focus on clarity and minimize misunderstandings by favoring direct, concrete statements. If you're unsure whether the person you are communicating with will understand your message, rephrase it, using "plain English."

4. The Inconsiderate Emailer. Addicted to the "reply all" function, this "cc" supporter clogs colleagues' already-overflowing inboxes with unnecessary messages. This person also marks less-than-critical emails as "high priority" and sends enormous attachments that crash unwitting recipients' computers.

The right approach: Break the habit of using email as your default mode of communication, as many conversations are better suited for quick phone calls or in-person discussions. The benefit? The less email you send, the less you're likely to receive.

5. The Interrupter. The Interrupter has little regard for others' peace, quiet or concentration. When this person is not entering your work area to request immediate help, the Interrupter is in meetings loudly tapping on a laptop, fielding calls on a cell phone, or initiating off-topic side conversations.

The right approach: Don't let competing demands and tight deadlines trump basic common courtesy. Simply put, mind your manners to build healthy relationships at work.

6. The Stick in the Mud. This person is all business all of the time. Disapproving of any attempt at levity, the constant killjoy doesn't have fun at work and doesn't think anyone else should either.

The right approach: Have a sense of humor and don't be afraid to laugh at yourself once in awhile. A good laugh can help you build rapport, boost morale, and deflate tension when working under stressful situations.

It's fairly easy to spot the qualities that make the above individuals irritating -- at least when the behaviors are displayed by others. It can be a challenge to recognize when you exhibit them yourself. You may not realize, for instance, that you always pepper your communications with industry- or company-specific jargon, even when speaking with new employees or outside contacts. Though you may not be a full-fledged Interrupter or Stick in the Mud, take care to avoid heading down their paths.

The best advice: Remember common courtesy and act toward others as you want them to act toward you.

Not a Hundred Percent

I am so lazy to blog today… the reason is I’m not feeling well. Runny nose and , watery eye… hayyy! I have colds and its driving me crazy. Despite what I’m feeling, I still need to work today since I was out of the office yesterday, not that I was on leave but because I attended a meeting outside. I represented my boss in the Budget Review conducted in MMDA.

I missed blogging for a day… missed hopping from one blog to another, as well as checking websites during breaks looking forward to monetizing my blog.

I pray that I’ll be okay next week because I will undergo our Annual Physical Examination on Wednesday; otherwise, my salary on the next payday will be on hold.

A Surprise Birthday Bash!

“As one chapter ends, another begins for you. Enjoy all the things you have been looking forward to. Happy birthday and a very happy retirement to you!” This is part of my message to my boss.

We have been so busy during the past few days because we planned and prepared for our boss’s birthday. It was a surprise party. We prepared PowerPoint presentations that include messages from present and former staff, and some colleagues, and of course, appetizing foods. She has been pronouncing that she wants to retire at the age of 63 that also marks her 21st year in the city government. This gave us the idea of sponsoring a grand birthday celebration for her. She was astounded and we are so glad about her reaction.

Let me show some of our coolest shots last night.

Cute Photos- Part II

She is fond of taking out all the contents of my bag and when she got hold of my ID, Hubby let her wear it. This photo is still saved in his phone as "Model Employee" :)

taken at La Mesa Ecopark last summer

This is Thea's latest photo shot using Hubby's Nokia 6300 phone.

Too Many Spam E-Mails

Spam e-mails, otherwise known as “bulk e-mail” or “junk e-mail” is exponentially growing these days and annoyed several e-mail users. I am one of those… I opened my spam in my Gmail account today assuming that the confirmation email I am waiting was accidentally stored in the spam rather than in the Inbox. A of the 239 mails in it, almost 50% say that I have won in a lottery and some of them even used the names of big companies just to victimize their recipients. I just wonder when and where these spammers get other persons’ email information. To minimize receiving numerous spam emails, I decided to try e-mail Filtering, which is known to be one of the methods of refusing spam. I hope it will work for me.

Ginataang Hipon (Shrimps in Coconut Milk)

With the limited and typical recipes I know, I guess my family is getting bored with the daily menus prepared on the dining table. Good thing there are many resources available for me to try other recipes. What are those resources? The most commonly used nowadays is the Internet, by just typing the recipe you of the food want in the Google search bar, several results will appear. I am also a collector of recipes found in the packages of canned goodies, pasta, condiments, etc. There are times that I would even ask the fish or meat vendor on how to cook this and that (lol). Watching cooking shows on TV can also enhance the knowledge of a chef wannabe haha.

Last Saturday, I tried to cook Ginataang Hipon based on a recipe presented by a renowned chef on TV I used to watch a long long time ago…I was surprised I did very well, hehe. My family liked it very much *winks*. Here is the simple cooking procedure:

Ginataang Hipon (Shrimp in Coconut Milk)

Ingredients:

250 grams Shrimps
1 ¼ cup coconut cream
3 tablespoons Delmonte Tomato Paste
salt and 3 pcs siling labuyo (you can also ground pepper) to taste.

Instructions:

1. In a medium pot, bring coconut milk to a boil.
2. Add the shrimps and tomato paste and simmer for 5-10 minutes.
3. Season with salt and pepper.
4. Serve hot

Cute Photos!

I was browsing and at the same organizing my e-files, when I opened a folder containing Thea's photos. Here are some of the cutest pix stored in my pc.:

She loves french fries (occasionally). Hey, I'm not encouraging your children to eat too much fatty foods.

Just another great MOMents...

This is her favorite spot when she was just starting to walk on her own.

Too shy to show off her tooth. Yeah, I mean her neo-natal tooth.

Happy Father's Day!

Father's Day is a celebration which started in the early 20th century to complement Mother's Day in celebrating fatherhood and male parenting, and to honor and remember all fathers. The date of its celebration varies worldwide and usually involves gift-giving to fathers and family-oriented activities. This year it will be celebrated on June 15th in most countries, including the Philippines.
My husband's experience of a first-time dad started on the day that we confirmed that I am pregnant. He accompanied me on my very first pre-natal check-up, bought my natal supplements, and even my first maternity dress. He has also withdrawn his overseas job application just to be with me and waited until lovely Yasmin Althea is born. He is hardworking and a good provider. We really appreciate everything that you do for our family. We love you so much, Papa!

On the other hand, I terribly miss my father right at this very moment. He passed away last March 13, 2000. I regret that I wasn't at his side during the last few years of his life. Nevertheless, I will always thank him for letting me experience a wonderful childhood, for the countless PTA meetings attended during my elementary and high school days, and for the values instilled in me and my siblings. Recounting the days, he was a conscientious farm worker then. I miss you, Papa Nolding!

To all the fathers out there, ADVANCE HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!!!

P.S. Special thanks to my friend, Lolit who sent the image used in this article.

First Day!

Still dizzy due to lack of sleep, I opened my blog just to keep you posted on my life’s day-day phenomenon. Despite the sudden downpour yesterday, I attended the first session on one of my two subjects/courses this term. I was 45 minutes behind the class schedule. Our professor was talking about the overview of the course and its requirements when I arrived. He he informed us that TM241 would require us, students to go through several readings, prepare two dozens of reaction papers, and a couple of group projects. Whew! Isn’t it mind-boggling! Haha… The second part of the lecture enlightened us on the Technology Adoption Process…The session ended at 9pm…I arrived home after an hour and a half of travel…Hubby waited for me at the jeepney stop. This time, I missed putting the little girl into sleep while singing Barny Song and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star together *sobs*.

As promised, the lecturer on our 2-part Accounting Workshop emailed us the result of the exam she gave us last Sunday. Yuhoo! I was so happy…I passed the exam. I am extending my warmest congratulations to those who got the highest marks. Congrats, guys!!!

Post Holiday Syndrome

Almost all Filipino employees had a one-day break yesterday. Thanks to GMA who declared June 9 as a holiday instead of June 12 (Philippine Independence Day).

Unlike others who enjoyed the extended weekend through out-of-town trips, or simply stayed at home with their loved ones, mine was indeed a tiring one. Last Saturday, I cleaned the fridge, went to the market, and prepared for the exam. And on top of it, I also attended to the little girl's needs since my sister was out during the whole day. Sunday was an extremely busy day too.

Yesterday, Hubby and I cleaned and re-organized our room. The laundry also piled up that even my sister helped me… still, we didn’t finish the job.

Guess what the consequence of this; I felt not reporting for work today. And the worst scenario is – I was confused on the color of uniform, instead of wearing the pair for Tuesday, I am wearing yesterday’s set of uniform hehehe. It was an honest mistake, I swear! I can’t go home to change as I am now living in Mandaluyong, unlike 3 years ago that I used to live 3 blocks away from the office.

Lesson learned: To Avoid Confusion - Separate the unused uniform due to holidays or absences/leave from those which will be worn during the rest of the week. (lol)

Earning EC Credits Made Easy

Two days ago, Entrecard announced that the long awaited option to buy credits has arrived. In addition to dropping Entrecards, this option will help bloggers who want to launch a massive campaign.

Curious about this new feature, I purchased 1000 Entrecard Credits worth $9.50 yesterday. I spent the money I earned from my first paid opp from PPP. At the time I am composing this post, I have 1,414 credits on my account.

Why not try it for yourself. On your dashboard, you will now find a link to “Buy Credits”. You can also use this link: http://entrecard.com/r/buy_credits.

100 Posts

When I was pregnant with the little girl, I created this online journal, which I regularly updated until October 2006. As a busy first-time mom, juggling work schedules and daily household chores, I temporarily stopped from blogging. It was just this year, February 14 to be exact, when I felt the urge to be back in the blogosphere. I noticed several improvements in blogging platforms like Blogger. Some of the awesome features today is that - it enables bloggers to add links, widgets, tag boards and other blogging elements. I am hooked (again) because I was able to meet new bunch of friends online.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention about what has written on the title of this post. It has been more than three months since I wrote my first post on this blog. Yesterday, I wrote about Entrecard and I'm not only that their site is already fixed but also that was my 100th post. :) To all my avid fans, I mean readers (lol), thank you for regularly reading my musings and my rants.

Entrecard Website Outage Fixed

Entrecard is now up after a long outage since June 1. Unfortunately, an electrical fire at the data center affected their servers. Entrecard is being hosted with ThePlanet, and the fire, according the advisory, has effected over 9000 websites hosted with ThePlanet. Their team worked ‘round the clock to get their data center back online.

Just few minutes ago, I received an email from EC support saying that there’s an advert waiting for my approval. When I logged in my account, I was delighted because the site is already OK.

Tagged (Again)

I got two related memes today.

Food Allergies

Has your child diagnosed with food allergy? How did you handle the situation?

My husband brought our daughter to the hospital yesterday due to food allergy. I was not at home for more than 8 hours, so I was not able to witness what really happened. Here is the story:

During lunch, the little girl had a serving of macaroni soup cooked by Nanay. She does not like tomato-based foods just like the Kalderata I prepared for them, so she chose to eat the macaroni soup. Then afterwards, Thea had her usual afternoon siesta. However, she woke up at around 3 p.m. with several red spots on her skin – one of the symptoms of allergy. Hubby decided to bring her to the nearby hospital wherein she was diagnosed with food allergy. The doctor gave her an anti-allergy injection, prescribed a 5-day medication (Iterax), and provided us list of foods that are not allowed for food allergy sufferers. When I came home, the allergies are gone.

Based on the online research I made a while ago, the most common food allergies are allergy from milk, egg, peanut, tree nut, seafood, shellfish, soy and wheat.

Lesson learned: We, parents, should be wary about food allergens, food labels, and the symptoms of food allergic reactions.
